Meet the cheetahs

Pecan Pecan

Pecan

Pecan is a member of the Nut family. She is the daughter of Hazelnut and was the sister of Pistachio, Macadamia, Cashew and Walnut. Walnut was the only male in the litter and disappeared shortly before the cubs became independent. Macadamia, Pistachio and Cashew have also since disappeared, making Pecan the last surviving member at over 12 years old! Pecan, like all the Nuts, ranges mainly outside the commonly visited areas on the Serengeti plains, and hence is a little shy and does not like vehicles to come too close. Although in recent years she has been spending more time at Gol and Semetu, and is hence becoming more habituated. She produced her first litter – one male cub called Pinenut - in August 2001. Pinenut who was thought to have an artistic soul was found dead in February 2008 at Gol kopjes. Thanks to pictures sent in through the cheetah watch campaign, we were able to establish that his death was the result of a fight with Maurus and Jerome, who at the time were the territorial males of Gol kopjes. In May 2003, Pecan had her second litter, a male and a female cub called Titania and Oberon who became independent by the end of 2004 when they had teamed up with Ginger's male cub, Puck. In 2008, Pecan had another 2 male cubs, who are have now reached independence and are often seen close to Semetu and along the Ngare Nanyuki river.

Pecan was last seen in June 2010.
